Stepping Back from Styrofoam

That Styrofoam cup holding your morning coffee may soon be a thing of the past.

State Sen. Liz Krueger has introduced a bill that would phase out the use of polystyrene in the food service industry statewide. The Food Service Waste Reduction Act would give restaurants, food providers and supermarket companies one year to find alternatives to Styrofoam, as well as require the state Department of Environmental Conservation to keep an updated list of those alternatives. The measure pushes for recyclable or compostable options.

Krueger, a Manhattan Democrat, cited the New York City school system's use of 150 million Styrofoam meal trays annually.

If passed, New York would be the first state to enact such a law. Several cities in California already have similar laws.
