Pols Urge State To Hike Stem-Cell Research $$
Stephanie Gaskell
The state should invest $1 billion in stem-cell research over the next 10
years to keep scientists from leaving New York for California, three state
senators said yesterday.
On Nov. 2, California voters passed Proposition 71, which mandates the state
spend $3 billion on stem-cell research.
"If the state of New York does not recognize the competitive need, our
research scientists are all going to change their tune from 'I Love New York'
to 'California, Here I Come,' " Deputy Minority Leader Eric Schneiderman
(D- Bronx) told a press conference at City Hall.
In 2001, President Bush restricted federal funding of stem-cell research.
"While we congratulate the citizens of California and their leaders for
what they've done, we know that the real epicenter and focus of medical
research has traditionally been in New York," said Minority Leader David
Paterson (D-Manhattan).
Like California, New York state would raise money by selling $1 billion in
bonds over a 10-year period, the senators said.
"Many, many jobs will be lost otherwise," Paterson said.
The senators also urged the private sector to donate money to the cause.
Although both the city and state have massive budget gaps in the coming
years, Sen. Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) said she's "willing to bet that
most taxpayers would be [more] interested in economic development to cure
major diseases . . . than a new sports stadium," referring to Mayor
Bloomberg's plan to build a football stadium on the West Side.
Krueger said she also wants to ban human cloning, "in order to prevent
abuses."
