Gianaris Picked as Hil's Delegate

State Assemblyman Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria) said he could be taking a trip to Denver next August if the Democratic Party chooses Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) to be its presidential candidate in primary elections early next year.

Gianaris said he would be one of six local delegates to accompany Clinton to the Democratic National Convention in Denver, which will take place between Aug. 25 and Aug. 28. The other delegates include former Mayor David Dinkins, state Sen. Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan), state Assemblyman Jonathan Bing (D-Manhattan), Long Island City activist Ida Torres and Anne Marie Anzalone, chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-Jackson Heights).

"I am honored to be part of this historic effort to change the direction of our country after eight years of George W. Bush as president," Gianaris said. "I think she has the experience to put us back on track and bring us back to the economic prosperity and peaceful international world of the Clinton years."

Primary elections will take place in early January and presidential candidates are likely to be in place following Super Duper Tuesday on Feb. 5, when there will be primaries in 22 states. The Republican National Convention will be held in St. Paul, Minnesota during the first four days of September.

Gianaris said he endorsed Clinton for president several months ago and hopes to take an active role in her campaign.

"I'm available to do whatever they ask of me," he said. "I'm looking forward to being helpful in any way, even if it means traveling to other states."

Gianaris said he thinks there are two issues that are most important for Clinton to focus on during her campaign.

"Domestically, I think we all want to see a strong economy and better health care," he said. "Internationally, we are a mess right now, whether we area talking about Iraq, Afghanistan or the Middle East in general. I'm looking forward to seeing someone restore U.S. standing in the world."

In the meantime, he said he hopes Democratic candidates remain civil during upcoming debates.

"During the last debate, it seems the candidates turned their fire inward, which I thought was very unproductive," he said. "We should do whatever it takes to beat the Republicans in 2008. Because Clinton is doing so well, it seems that other candidates are trying to take her down, which only aides the opposition."

Gianaris said he attended two Democratic National Conventions in 1992 and 2004, but not in an official capacity.
