Affordable Housing Hearing Held in Rochester
State lawmakers on Wednesday held a public hearing in Rochester to hear from local experts about the challenges of securing affordable housing.
Senate Democrats, who hosted the meeting, are planning to introduce legislation geared toward making affordable housing more available. But they realize each part of the state requires different initiatives to solve the problem.
"It won't be a one-size-fits-all piece of legislation," said Travis Proulx, a spokesman for Sen. Liz Krueger, D-Manhattan, who led Wednesday's event.
Lawmakers were interested in hearing about Rochester's recent housing market study, which aimed to strengthen neighborhoods. Rochester is considered to be one city that has worked aggressively on revitalization efforts.
In addition to Krueger, attendees included Sen. Antoine Thompson, D-Buffalo; Robert A. McNary, director of community planning for Empire State Development; Molly Clifford, director of Neighborhood Empowerment Teams for the city of Rochester; Steve Baldwin of the Corn Hill Neighbors Association; Joan Roby-Davison, executive director of Group 14621; Chris Hilderbrant of the Center for Disability Rights; and Alex Castro, executive director of the Housing Council.
The event was held at the University of Rochester.
Hearings were also held in New York City and Albany.
