State Sen. Liz Krueger is looking to pass a bill which would require the New York State pension fund to divest from companies with business in Sudan. Federal loopholes currently allow companies like Coca-Cola, in which the fund has more than $347 million invested, to retain investments in the war-torn country.
"Every day we wait to pass this bill is another day of implicitly condoning genocide in Darfur," Krueger said.
The legislation has 17 Democratic co-sponsors, but has been pending in a committee. Krueger stressed that good financial investments also come with social responsibility.
