A “Breastfeeding Bill of Rights” got closer to becoming New York state law when the Assembly passed a bill sponsored by an upstate legislator, Aileen Gunther.
The bill has been a key piece of legislation for State Sen. Liz Krueger, who introduced it in the State Senate in 2006. She called on the senate majority leadership to move forward with the policy in her chamber as well.
The bill of rights would require that new and expecting mothers be informed of all breastfeeding options during and after a stay at maternal healthcare facilities. Formula providers and other commercial interests would be banned from pressuring mothers to forego breastfeeding.
