With only one more year of mayoral control left for New York City's public education system, State Sen. Liz Krueger has established a task force to look at how the shift of power has affected the school system.
The New York City Education Reform and Accountability Act of 2002 gave most administrative and personnel power to the schools chancellor, who reports directly to the mayor, but the act is scheduled to expire on June 23, 2009.
Krueger's New York City School Governance Task Force, comprising nine Democratic Senate members, will hold six public hearings over the next few months to see if any changes should be made to mayoral control.
"I have met with many constituents since this law want into effect who have serious and legitimate concerns about our schools," Krueger said. "I don't think anyone wants to revert back to the old Board of Education model, but this is just the right time to evaluate how we should adjust our laws to improve the system and reach further toward our goal of having the best school system in the country."
