RELEASE*** State Senator Liz Krueger Presents Modest Proposal to
Single-handedly Revolutionize Gaming Industry, Voting Infrastructure and Educational Inequity Albany, NY – State
Senator Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan)
called on the State Legislature to take a closer look at her modest proposal
to bring Video Lottery Terminals (VLT’s) to public schools. The VLT’s would double as voting machines
on Election Days and would be conveniently placed next to the Snapple vending
machines. “Everyone benefits from this
proposal – schools, children, parents, voters, the gaming industry, not to
mention the State Legislature,” remarked Krueger. “It’s a win-win all around for everyone involved.” Senator Krueger has been a vocal opponent of
Governor Pataki’s plan to use revenue from VLT’s to pay for education. Yet upon further consideration, the Senator
recognized that if VLT’s were placed in public schools instead of at racetracks,
parents and children would be able to take primary responsibility for
educational funding. “Why not
eliminate the middleman by allowing parents and students to directly fund
their own education,” stated Krueger. Senator Krueger’s modest proposal not only combines VLT’s with voting machines, but also awards a free spin for every vote. “I realized what is the point of making a machine that is used only one or two days per year,” said Krueger. “Why not create a machine that serves two purposes? We can increase voter turnout through a free chance to win big and pay for education at the same time. We might even be able to draw down new federal dollars for this original math curriculum…learning to play the odds.” “The Campaign for Fiscal Equity lawsuit showed all of us that our public schools are woefully under funded,” concluded Krueger. “We need creative solutions to fix these problems and I believe that I have come across a unique and workable way to resolve the funding crisis. By the way, I am totally pulling your leg here.” -30- |
