State Senator Liz Krueger Calls on Candidates in Council Races to Allow Ballot Access for All Candidates

New York, NYState Senator Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) reaffirmed her position today that all candidates who have fulfilled their petitioning obligations should be able to take a line on an electoral ballot.  “I have always had concerns about the practice of kicking potential candidates off of the ballot largely because it is anti-Democratic,” stated Senator Krueger.  “Unless a candidate has not collected the required number of signatures, I believe that ballot access should be within reach for any qualified New Yorker.”

In the race to succeed City Council Speaker Gifford Miller (District #5 - Upper East Side & Roosevelt Island), all of the candidates, save for one, have agreed to a nonaggression pact.  In recent days there have been rumblings that there may be an attempt to throw one or more of the candidates off the primary ballot.

“I urge all candidates to support an open process and to not challenge the signatures of their opponents,” concluded Senator Krueger.
