SENATOR KRUEGER DISAPPOINTED IN RULING BY NEW YORK STATE COURT OF APPEALS FOR RULING AGAINST MARRIAGE EQUALITY FOR ALL NEW YORKERS

New York—In response to today's ruling by New York State's highest court, the Court of Appeals, State Senator Liz Krueger expressed her disappointment that the court ruled against same-sex marriage advocates.

"The State of New York should be ensuring marriage equality for all New York couples—regardless of the sex of the two partners," Krueger declared.

"As a married woman, it is regrettable that same-sex couples do not enjoy the same rights and responsibilities as my husband and I," Krueger stated. "However, I believe that New York State can, and should, continue to be a state which sets a positive example for the rest of the country. This fight is not over."

Krueger, a longtime advocate of equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, is a co-sponsor of legislation granting marriage equality to same-sex couples. The legislation has not moved in the Republican-controlled State Senate.

"Religious institutions around our state will continue to have the opportunity to make their own decisions about what marriage ceremonies they wish to perform—for both gay and straight couples, as well as those of different religions. Only the State is compelled to meet the legal obligation of equal treatment for all couples. We must now move forward with political and moral courage, and ensure that obligation is met," Krueger concluded.
