Women Legislators Stand Up To NRA Bullying

Albany – This morning, women legislators from the State Senate and Assembly gathered in the State Capitol and challenged the NRA to stop bullying women who support common-sense gun regulations with threats of violence and misogynistic rhetoric. Senator Roxanne Persaud and Assembly Member Jo Anne Simon, who received threats after introducing a bill to limit ammunition sales, including a tweet from the NRA featuring bullets placed next to their pictures, were joined by several other legislators who have faced similar responses, including Senate Minority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Senator Liz Krueger, and Assembly Members Deborah Glick, Ellen Jaffee, and Rebecca Seawright. Statement From Senator Krueger On Governor Signing Bill To Expand Insurance Access For Pregnant Women

New York – State Senator Liz Krueger released the following statement today after Governor Andrew Cuomo signed S.5972/A.6780 into law yesterday. The new law will make pregnancy a qualifying event triggering a special enrollment period for the state health insurance exchange, allowing pregnant women to enroll in a health plan at any time. Report to Seniors – December 2015

I frequently talk to seniors in my district who face severe financial pressures. Therefore, I wanted to use this newsletter to look at these pressures both from the big-picture policy perspective and from the individual perspective of what programs are out there that may help seniors meet their needs. This newsletter will offer an overview of the major benefit programs that can help seniors with housing, healthcare, and other costs of living. I wanted to highlight these programs because so many seniors have not enrolled in programs they are eligible for, especially the Senior Citizens’ Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) program and the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP). I will also discuss a couple of major policy issues facing seniors – the lack of cost-of-living-adjustment for Social Security and skyrocketing premiums for long-term care insurance. (more…)
