Krueger, Sierra Club, Elected Officials Urge Governor To Phase Out Coal By 2020

NEW YORK – Senators, Assemblymembers, and City Council Members came together today at a City Hall press conference to urge Governor Cuomo to commit to transitioning New York off of coal-fired power by 2020 in advance of the international climate talks in Paris, slated to begin November 30th. The event was hosted by State Senator Liz Krueger and the Sierra Club and featured elected officials including Assemblymembers Brian Kavanagh, Jo Anne Simon and Rebecca Seawright, and Council Members Donovan Richards and Ben Kallos, along with around 100 community members. Gotham Gazette Op-Ed: Time for New York to Cut the Coal

New York – Today, in an op-ed published in Gotham Gazette, Sen. Krueger called on Governor Andrew Cuomo to commit to an enforceable mandate to close all coal plants in the state by 2020, and provide resources for a just transition for workers and affected communities.

Crain’s Op-Ed: New York should dump coal, oil and gas stocks before they fall even further

New York – Today, in an op-ed published in Crain’s New York Business, Council Member Helen Rosenthal, State Senator Liz Krueger, and Assembly Assistant Speaker Felix Ortiz called on New York City and State officials to fully divest their pension funds from all fossil fuel holdings. Citing concerns about the risks of fossil fuel investments, as well as the goal of reducing emissions, Rosenthal, Krueger, and Ortiz encouraged State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, Mayor Bill de Blasio, and City Comptroller Scott Stringer to build on the Mayor’s recent announcement that he would push the city’s pension funds to divest from coal and study divesting from all fossil fuels.  (more…)

Krueger, Hoylman Release Letter Urging Action At Paris Climate Talks

New York – Today, State Senators Liz Krueger and Brad Hoylman released a letter addressed to President Barack Obama, Secretary of State John F. Kerry, and Special Envoy for Climate Change Todd Stern, urging the U.S. delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, in Paris, to push for a strong, realistic agreement that significantly contributes to arresting the increase in average global temperatures that is causing climate change.
