Skift: Airbnb Gears Up for Big Legal and Legislative Battles in New York

Liz spoke to travel news source Skift about Airbnb the 2011 law she passed to help the city protect New York residents and tourists from illegal hotel operations.

New York State Senator Liz Krueger, one of the authors and sponsors of the bill that established the current law, told Skift that Camara’s bill, like a handful of others circulating will never pass as currently written and act as conversation starters.
Sen. Krueger has sat down with Airbnb on a number of occasions to discuss changes, but little has come of it. She told Skift, “It’s not a matter of us not being open to changing the law, but the ideas they have for loosening the law wind up making it unenforceable.”

Earlier this month, Liz hosted a community forum on marijuana policy reform at Baruch College, and announced her plans to introduce legislation this year to legalize, regulate, and tax marijuana in New York State.

Statement on the Illegal Hotel Law, Airbnb, and the Nigel Warren Case

Liz released the following statement in response to recent developments regarding the illegal hotel law and Airbnb. Liz sponsored the 2010 law that enables New York City to take enforcement action against illegal hotel operations and illegal short-term rentals in residential multiple dwellings.

Capital New York: A New (Non-Smoking) Champion for Marijuana Legalization

Sen. Krueger will soon be introducing legislation to legalize, regulate, and tax marijuana in New York State. Capital New York’s Dana Rubinstein attended Sen. Krueger’s recent forum on marijuana policy reform, and reports on Sen. Krueger’s forthcoming legislation:

“It is my intention as a New York State senator to soon introduce a law that would actually decriminalize, regulate and tax marijuana in New York,” said State Senator Liz Krueger, an Upper East Side liberal, on Wednesday night.

The room full of marijuana enthusiasts erupted into applause.

Liz Joins Legislators and Women’s Equality Coalition to Demand Legislature Allow Votes on Governor’s Full 10-Point Women’s Equality Agenda

State legislators, New York City Council members, and leaders of prominent organizations advocating for women’s equality and health gathered today to demand an open floor vote in the State Senate on Governor Andrew Cuomo’s 10-point Women’s Equality Act, whose introduction is expected this legislative session.

May 15 — Marijuana Policy Today: Where do We Go from Here?

New York’s marijuana possession law remains broken as tens of thousands of mostly Black and Latino youth are arrested for marijuana possession each year.
