Post-Sandy Update: Information on Volunteering, Donating, and Accessing Assistance

Thank you again to everyone who volunteered to check on and distribute emergency supplies to storm victims. Your work has made a huge difference in the lives of New Yorkers during this extremely difficult time. While power, heat, and elevator service have now been restored to the overwhelming majority of residents in Manhattan, significant needs still exist throughout much of the city.

Read on for more information on volunteering, donating, or accessing assistance for yourself and your family as we recover from the hurricane.

Federal Disaster Benefits and Assistance Guide

This guide provided by Representative Jerrold Nadler’s office details federal services and benefits available to New Yorkers affected by Hurricane Sandy. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, unemployment payments up to 26 weeks for workers who temporarily lost jobs because of the disaster, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster. A full list of assistance programs is available in the document, which can be downloaded from this page.

UPDATED: Weekend Volunteering Nov. 3-4 to Help with Post-Sandy Relief

My staff are attempting to keep abreast of the many, many opportunities to help out as we continue to recover from Hurricane Sandy. Aside from our work distributing food and checking on residents in the Lower East Side today, read on for many opportunities to help out or donate in multiple boroughs and citywide.

UPDATE: We’re hearing that 200 Madison Street and Stuyvesant Town are both overwhelmed with volunteers, which is great news! Please read on and consider helping elsewhere in Manhattan and the outer boroughs, now that most subway service has been restored!

Volunteering Today (Nov. 3) to Assist At-Risk Residents

For those able to help out today, I’m working with other Manhattan elected officials to organize door-knocking downtown at 200 Madison Street (cross-street is Rutgers Street). We’ll be checking on residents and helping distribute aid and identify at-risk residents that need help.

To get to 200 Madison Street from points further north on the East Side, you can take the M-15 bus down Second Avenue. If you exit where the route turns onto Allen Street, you will be about one block away from 200 Madison Street.

We will be accepting volunteers to help us door-knock and assist at-risk residents at this location from 10am today to 5pm today. As before, please bring a flashlight for your own safety, and also bring a backpack and comfortable shoes!
