Senator Liz Krueger hosted her Fourth Annual Senior Resource Fair earlier this month. The fair is a free event that brings together seniors from across the city with representatives from a variety of government and non-profit agencies specializing in everything from health services to housing assistance to at-home care. Joining with Senator Krueger and New York City residents were Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and representatives from the Office of City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

“It’s always been clear that there’s a need for this, to bring together agencies, non-profits and the communities they serve,” said Senator Krueger. “My district office is flooded with phone calls from Seniors in the district looking for help trying to wade through the automated systems and often times very confusing menus of agencies and organizations. Why not bring everyone into one room and bring the resources to the community?”
The Senior Resource Fair provides Seniors, and their friends and families, with the opportunity to access information from over 50 exhibitors, all of which offer helpful information to older adults.
“The Council has been deeply committed to providing services and programs for New York City’s Seniors,” said City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn. “This Senior Fair is a one stop shop for those who do not have easy access to information about City services and about specialized programs throughout the City. I want to thank Senator Liz Krueger for her continued commitment to Seniors and for hosting this Fair.”
“This Fair is a terrific resource for Seniors seeking health and housing services that can normally be hard to reach,” said Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer. “With over 50 exhibitors in one central location, the Senior Resource Fair lets Seniors cut through red tape and easily access these crucially important services.”
“With a growing Senior population, we must pay constant attention to making the City age-friendly,” said Council Member Dan Garodnick. “Senator Krueger is taking on that challenge by providing Seniors a forum for services they need, tailored just for them.”
The event, hosted at Temple Emanu-El on the East Side of Manhattan, brought information to not only East Siders but to attendees from across the five boroughs. The organizations who attended included providers of care-giver support, cultural events, healthcare, healthy aging, housing, transportation and volunteer opportunities, among other services.
In addition to these exhibitors, the Congressional Glaucoma Foundation performed on-site Glaucoma testing; Lenox Hill Hospital, on-site blood pressure testing; New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) offered assistance with filling out Health Care Proxies and Living Wills; and the Center for Hearing and Communication, free hearing tests.
Senator Krueger added “It’s amazing, based on the turnout, that something like this wasn’t started before we started it four years ago.”
